Αρχαία Πύδνα
Ancient Pydna
Ancient Pydna
Ancient Pydna was one of the most important cities of Pieria and Macedonia, mainly due to its strategic location and port. It is located in northern Pieria, on the coast of the Thermaic Gulf, about one kilometer south of the modern settlement of Makrygialos.
• Battle of Pydna (168 BC): The city is world-famous for the battle that took place near it in 168 BC. In this battle, the last king of Macedonia, Perseus, was defeated by the Roman consul Aemilius Paullus. This defeat marked the final subjugation of Macedonia and the Greek region to the Romans.
