The route from Refuge A (Spilios Agapitos) via Zonaria and the Louki (Couloir) to Mytikas is one of the most classic yet demanding ascents to the summit of Mount Olympus. It is a route that combines mountain hiking with technical scrambling (YDS Class 3), requiring caution, a lack of fear of heights, and the appropriate equipment.
🗺️ Route Stages
1.Refuge A (2,100m) to the Junction for Zonaria
Description: Start at the "Spilios Agapitos" Refuge and follow the clearly defined, uphill E4 trail. The route initially winds through Bosnian pines, and the landscape gradually transitions to a purely alpine setting.
The turn-off: After about an hour of uphill hiking, you will reach a distinctive junction. The E4 trail continues to the left towards the Skala summit. You turn right, following the path to Zonaria.
2.Zonaria (Below the Peaks)
Description: The Zonaria path traverses horizontally, running directly beneath the sheer rock faces of Stefani and Mytikas. The view overlooking the Kazania chasm to your right is imposing.
Terrain: The path is narrow and consists of scree (loose, shifting stones). Surefootedness is required.
3.Mytikas Couloir (The Gully) → Ascent to the Summit
Description: Upon reaching the base of the Couloir (there is a clear marker/sign on the rock), the technical section begins. Here, you put away your trekking poles and use your hands.
Gradient & Terrain: The slope reaches 40–50 degrees. The ascent takes place within the narrow couloir, following the red and blue markers on the rocks.
Finish: After approximately 150–200 meters of steep ascent/scrambling, you reach the summit of Greece, Mytikas (2,918m).
⚠️ Important Safety Instructions
A helmet is essential: The Louki is extremely exposed to rockfall. Whether caused by the wind or by climbers ahead, rocks fall at high speed. Do not attempt the ascent without a helmet.
Weather Conditions: In the presence of moisture, rain, ice, or strong winds, the couloir becomes extremely slippery and dangerous. Ascent should be avoided under such conditions.
Traffic Management: If you encounter a group descending while you are ascending, find a safe, sheltered spot to the side of the couloir and wait for them to pass to avoid rockfall.
